What are ADAC tests?

ADAC is a German automobile organisation that runs car seat tests with more rigorous criteria than what European safety laws require. They put an emphasis on frontal and side impact crashes and use Q-dummies with sensors to determine the effects on a variety of ages and sizes. Their goal is to provide consumers with indepedent, objective and comparative information about car seats to make the decision-making process a little bit simpler.

Which car seats are tested by ADAC?

Twice a year, ADAC carefully selects a handful of car seats to test.  These seats are usually already popular in the market or have a unique feature.  ADAC does not reveal which car seats have been selected until they announce their results, so parents can be sure the scores are unbiased and objective.

What do the ratings mean?

ADAC tests on 3 criteria—safety, ergonomics and ease of use—and gives the car seat an overall score. It's important to keep in mind that the lower the number the better! A score from 0.6 to 1.5 is determined 'Very good' and receives 5 stars. 1.6 to 2.5 is 'Good' for a 4-star rating. A 'Satisfactory' 3-star rating is between 2.6 to 3.5. Anything from 3.6 to 4.5 is 'Sufficient' and a rating above 4.6 is 'Inadequate'.
